چکیده

Although the brain is not perfectly symmetrical with respect to the mid-sagittal plane, the automatic detection of this plane and of the degree of symmetry is of interest for many anatomical and functional studies. We propose a method for detecting the best symmetry plane in 3D MR brain images. We express this problem as a registration problem and compute a degree of similarity between the image and its reflection with respect to a plane. The best plane is then obtained by maximizing the similarity measure. This optimization is performed using the downhill simplex method and is initialized by a plane obtained from principal inertia axes, which proves to be close to the global optimum. This is demonstrated on several MR brain images. The proposed algorithm is then successfully tested on simulated and real 3D MR brain images. We also investigated the influence of the optimization procedure control parameters on the computation speed and result precision. Preliminary results obtained on CT and SPECT images suggest that the method can be extended to other modalities. 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Brain Symmetry Plane Computation in MR Images Using Inertia Axes and Optimization

Detection of the best symmetry plane in 3D images can be treated as a registration problem between the original and the reflected images. The registration is performed in a 3D space of parameters defining orientation and shift of a reflection plane. We use the normalized metric as the similarity measure between original and reflected images and investigate an algorithm for computation of the be...

Automatic Bilateral Symmetry (Midsagittal) Plane Extraction from Pathological 3D Neuroradiological Images

Most pathologies (tumor, bleed, stroke) of the human brain can be determined by a symmetry-based analysis of neural scans showing the brain's 3D internal structure. Detecting departures of this internal structure from its normal bilateral symmetry can guide the classi cation of abnormalities. This process is facilitated by rst locating the ideal symmetry plane (midsagittal) with respect to whic...

Automatic Extraction of the Central Symmetry (Mid-Sagittal) Plane from Neuroradiology Images

Normal human brains present an approximate bilateral symmetry. This symmetry is reflected in CT and MR images depicting axial and coronal slices of the brain. Though the internal structure of a pathologic brain may depart from its normal bilateral symmetry, the ideal imaginary bilateral symmetry plane remains invariant. This plane is often referred to as the mid-sagittal plane of the brain. Aut...

Influences of reconstruction and attenuation correction in brain SPECT images obtained by the hybrid SPECT/CT device: evaluation with a 3‐dimensional brain phantom

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influences of reconstruction and attenuation correction on the differences in the radioactivity distributions in 123I brain SPECT obtained by the hybrid SPECT/CT device. Methods: We used the 3-dimensional (3D) brain phantom, which imitates the precise structure of gray mater, white matter and bone regions. It was filled with 123I solution (20...

Quantitative Comparison of SPM, FSL, and Brainsuite for Brain MR Image Segmentation

Background: Accurate brain tissue segmentation from magnetic resonance (MR) images is an important step in analysis of cerebral images. There are software packages which are used for brain segmentation. These packages usually contain a set of skull stripping, intensity non-uniformity (bias) correction and segmentation routines. Thus, assessment of the quality of the segmented gray matter (GM), ...
